Dew Flower (Drosanthemum candens) seen here in a coastal setting. Even though it was past its flowering peak, this incredible colony behind a lifesaving station on Melbourne’s fluorescent coast was impossible for this channel to ignore.
The neon embankment running down much of the southeast side of Port Phillip Bay is one of the metropolitan’s signature weedscapes, a remarkable matrix of indigenous coastal species and imported weeds that many residents likely assume are native. Superficially resembling related native pigfaces and noon-flowers, Drosanthemum is one of several South African imports likely to get a pass for being cheerfully native-ish.
