Mouse-eared Chickweed (Cerastium glomeratum), one of Melbourne’s’s ubiquitous weed microherbs, which gush from every cracked surface and unconquered margin before anything larger can take over. Eurasian natives and pan-globalists, their seed was brought here (and everywhere else) as a contaminant.

This part of Spring is the perfect time to try to get a handle on the whole group of incredibly successful generalists which are encapsulated under the epithet ‘chickweed’—they are well-watered, and just coming into flower, making identification a little easier. The photographed plant is another selection from the as-yet-unseated champion bluestone wall of metropolitan Melbourne.
